Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol with a sweet taste. Sorbitol is an isomer of mannitol. Sorbitol is used to relieve occasional constipation and irregularity. Sorbitol generally produces bowel movement in 1/4 to 1 hour when used rectally. Sorbitol often is used in modern cosmetics as a humectant and thickener.[ It is also used in mouthwash and toothpaste. Some transparent gels can be made only with sorbitol.
